US cracks down on international students (x/@defense_civil25)
The US Department of State (DOS) has been sending threatening emails to hundreds of foreign students, ordering them to self-deport because they have been participating in campus activism. This crackdown goes beyond those who took part in protests actively, with even students who simply shared, liked, or commented on "anti-national" social media posts being targeted.
The action has generated fears regarding the boundaries of free speech and repercussions of internet activity for students in the US. India states that immigration lawyers confirmed this update, further saying that even Indian students who just liked or shared a social media post could be targeted in this crackdown. This crackdown is among social media reviews conducted by the US Department of State, including Consulate officials.Hence, fresh student visa applications—whether for F (academic), M (vocational), or J (exchange) visas—will come under scrutiny too. The report further mentioned that one could be denied the opportunity to study in the US on the basis of how one uses social media. US Department of State to foreign students, which reads: "On behalf of the United States Department of State, the Bureau of Consular Affairs Visa Office hereby notifies you that more information became available after your visa was issued.
Consequently, your F-1 visa with validity date XXXXX was revoked in accordance with Section 221(i) of the United States Immigration and Nationality Act, as amended." The email also recommends that "individuals whose visa was cancelled may want to show their intention to leave the United States through the CBP Home App," and further states, "Once you leave the United States, you are required to personally deliver your passport to the U.S. embassy or consulate that issued your visa so your visa can be physically cancelled. If you intend to travel to the United States in the future, you must apply for another U.S.
